The Democratic States of Leeia is a huge, socially progressive nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate population of 284 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, the Environment, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 47%, but much higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.
Parents live in fear of governmental 'child protection' squads, the mining industry is making inroads into environmentally sensitive areas, most of the military's funding goes into researching space-age weaponry, and all forms of advertising are banned. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is moderate, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Leeia's national animal is the human race, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the nick.
