The Republic of Detropolis is a huge, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 699 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
The enormous government devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as the Environment and Social Welfare receiving almost no funds by comparison. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 21%. A healthy private sector is led by the Soda Sales industry, followed by Uranium Mining and Beef-Based Agriculture.
Police officers are seen patrolling the streets armed with satellite-guided truncheons, voting is compulsory, employers may fire workers without giving any reason, and the government is phasing in welfare programmes to tackle poverty. Crime is a problem. Detropolis's national animal is the mudskipper, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the kunt.
